Dear Germania Member, Thea Klabunde, President (614) 866-5876
Our Calendar for July and August includes two of our busiest events at our Club. Our very busy Red, White & Boom Celebration better known as our “Annual Bratwurst Festival” on July 3rd, 2007. Come and enjoy food and drinks and the fireworks, all from our backyard. Friday, July 20 you can dance under the stars with Ray Galla playing for your dancing enjoyment and Mike Bals cooking steaks on the grill to your liking. Just come and see the great job our “Garden Committee” has done. Sit in the beautiful garden in sunshine sipping a beer or pop and enjoy the “German Gemǜtlichkeit.”. On Friday, August 10, we have planned another Grill Night for you. On that night you can enjoy the music of Chris Weiss and Company. Friday, August 24 wehave another “Vierte Freitag Fest” (4th Friday Fest). It will get you in the mood for the next days’ event, the very famous BAVARIAN FEST, formerly known as Oktoberfest. There will be lots of activity both days, Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26, 2007 with lots of food, drinks, dancing, singing, etc. You do not want to miss that! On Saturday Night, Hank Haller’s Band from Cleveland will play and entertain us till the wee hours at night. Our Choruses and our Sister Societies from the Columbus area will sing for us, the Volkstänzer will dance for us and as a special treat the “Kinder-Jugendchor” will perform on Sunday afternoon. We will need a lot of help for these two big events, so please volunteer your time by signing up or calling 614/461-8095 and someone will get back to you.
In September we will start back up with our General Membership Meeting on Friday, September 7, 2007. We also would like to not forget to thank Joe Motika and Joe Fenner for their help in renovating the Men’s Restroom; it looks great. And a big “Thank You” to Christel Pounds and her House Committee for the fine job of spring cleaning, from the halls to the bar area etc. I am wishing you all a wonderful summer, if you are traveling, have a save trip. I hope to see you often at YOUR Society.

GERMANIA MÄNNERCHOR NEWS

John Kneller (614/898-9022)
Among the Germania group attending the National Sängerfest in Evansville, Indiana in April were 13 members of the Männerchor. Trish Gardner and Noel Franks prepared us well, and we lent our voices admirably to the overall success of the event. We enjoyed the gracious hospitality of our hosts, the Evansville Germania. Geműtlichkeit is alive and well on the Ohio River.
Upon returning to Columbus we participated in our Germania Maifest. Then, on May 11, 2007 we helped the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes at CedarwoodSchool celebrate their own, first ever, “Sängerfest”. They were well mannered, attentive and well rehearsed. The program was, of course, almost entirely in German and they sang their parts of it from memory. Their music teacher is Trish Gardner.
The Männerchor is now beginning to build a new repertoire as we apply our voices to some songs that will appear in the 2008 Zentral Ohio Sängerbezirk’s Sängerfest songbook. Our next singing engagement is at the Newark Männerchor German American Fest (Ox Roast) on August 11, 2007.

Please continue to uphold in prayer and wish continued speedy recovery for Narcisco Bando, George Bastaja, Ron Guth, Mike Hendel, Werner Samlowski (suffered a stroke) and Judy Wolff (it was such a joy to see her at the Garden Opening). We wish all of them joy and regaining health for this year of 2007. Please let the Germania know if any of our members are sick or suffering, we want to be there for you in prayer. We also would like to rejoice with you in any healing progress. Brunhilde Barron, Lotte Könnemann, Gisela Lobnow are all doing better, thank God.

In October 2006, we failed to express our sympathy to the family of Ivan “Jack” Forrest Mills, Jr. who passed away at the age of 83 on October 21, 2006. He was not only a member of The Germania but also of the Columbus Männerchor and the Amerigo Club, a veteran of WWII (US Navy Air Division), a graduate of OSU and is survived by his widow Jean and children. He is being missed and we are saddened at his passing.
DEUTSCHER RADFAHRER VEREIN
By Stephen Schneider(614/253-4211)
The first ride of the season was delayed by a knee injury and so we rode this past Sunday, the 10th of June, up along the Olentangy Bike Path. It was a beautiful day with no humidity and a light wind to keep us cool. The neighborhood publication, “The GermanVillage Gazette”. wrote a nice article on our Club’s bicycle outings and a few new riders showed up.
I’d like to extend a warm welcome to a few new riders: Rich Schreiber, Walt Megown, Robert Nolan and Pete Molnar (a new Germania member). Rich, Walt and Robert learned about the DRV through the news article and were interested in seeing what we were all about. After an afternoon of riding, I think they were quite pleased with out little group. Everyone had a great time and were very impressed by the potluck picnic in our newly opened “Bier Garten”.
Next month, on July 15th, we will be riding from Yellow Springs to Xenia. It is quite a memorable ride, most of it is shaded and the town of Yellow Springs is a delight to explore. This ride meets at the Train Depot, located on your right side as you enter the town on State Route 68, at 1pm, then we ride to Xenia. Following the ride we will gather at the Olde Trail Tavern for dinner together and relax with a cold beer! As with all the rides, please feel free to call or e-mail me for updates and directions: 614/253-4211 or nsustephen@yahoo.com.
The remaining rides will be as follows: August 12th finds us riding from Gambier to Danville, a beautiful ride through Amish country. Again, we meet at the train depot in Gambier, just below the town (contact me for directions on this one!) at 1pm and then ride toDanville. Following our return to the depot we will all join in our potluck picnic. Before driving home, I will give everyone directions to an orchard for fresh apples and peaches on the way back to Columbus, not to be missed!
The September ride will be from Granville to Johnstown on the 9th and, if the Hohmann’s will have us, we will converge onto their farm for the picnic.
The last ride of the season will be on October 7th and we will traverse the ThreeRiversPark just south of Columbus. Following this ride we will hopefully be gathering at the Motika’s again for one last picnic of the season. So mark your calendars and please join us for an afternoon of delightful fun!
Tschűss!
Stephen Schneider
